Navigation Light

Description


The Navigation Light was designed in response to a requirement for the US Marine Corps' Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV) that will soon be renamed the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV). The Navigation Light is installed upon the turret of the vehicle and when lighted, provides visual identification of the vehicle within a formation, either on land or in the water.

The LED light is visible for over 3 miles. The light consists of a sixteen‑inch high mast, which is topped with a cylindrical array of green and infrared LEDs. A Control Unit, which is located within the vehicle, enables the operator to adjust the light to several different settings.

In normal operation, the green LEDs would be lighted in a 360º ring. If it were desirable for the light to be invisible to the naked eye, two rings of infrared LEDs can be activated.

In yet another setting, the lights facing forward may be extinguished while the rearward facing green LEDs remain illuminated, thus minimizing visual exposure from the front of the vehicle. In an emergency, the entire array can be made to flash, indicating a distress condition.

A small array on the top of the vehicle can flash independently, thereby providing identification to aircraft above.
