MAWR Mobile Aircrew Webbing Retractor

Product Part Number: 2003132‑1

Description

MAWR incorporates 80 inches of retractable Kevlar webbing for restraint management. A dual‑mode inertia locking system is used, sensitive to vehicle and webbing strap acceleration. The MAWR is a COTS derivative of the MA‑16 Gunner’s Reel, a Koch‑developed inertia reel qualified to the stringent requirements of MIL‑R‑8236F, type MA‑16. Additionally, Koch inertia reels have been subjected to over 300 dynamic crash tests in accordance with MIL‑S‑58095. Each of these tests has been successful.

MAWR easily adapts to existing or emerging aircrew harnesses or belts. Webbing slack in the restraint is eliminated, allowing the aircrew to concentrate on their mission without constantly readjusting their safety strap while minimizing tripping hazards. No slack webbing means ejection risk in a crash, hard landing, or violent maneuver is minimized. The webbing swivel reduces aircrew‑webbing entanglement and prevents the webbing from “roping.” Since the belt length is self‑adjusting, a manual webbing adjuster (a structural weak point) is unnecessary. Total weight is less than six pounds.

Problem

Aircrew members have been ejected from helicopters and seriously injured during relatively benign ground impacts.

The Mobile Aircrew Webbing Retractor (MAWR) is a Koch-developed device designed to prevent highly mobile aircrew from being ejected during a crash event and to provide fall protection when working near open aircraft doors or hatches.

Solution

Prevent aircrew from being ejected from the cabin area during mission maneuvers or crash impacts. The safest location for aircrew during these operations is within the protective confines of the aircraft.

H Koch & Sons worked with the U.S. Navy to implement a “Commercial Off The Shelf” (COTS) system to address these issues and drew from our long tradition of aircrew safety and protection to design and develop an innovative restraint device.

The MAWR is a derivative of the highly successful MA-16 Gunner’s Reel, an inertia reel with dual-mode locking capability qualified to the rigorous MIL-R-8236F specification.

The MAWR increases aircrew comfort and safety by:

  • Easily adapting to existing or emerging aircrew harnesses or belts.
  • Eliminating slack webbing, allowing aircrew to concentrate on their mission without constant strap length management.
  • Minimizing tripping hazards during ground troop insertion/extraction missions.
  • Reducing aircrew-webbing entanglement.
  • Preventing webbing “roping” by incorporating a webbing swivel.

Aircraft Installation

Current application:

  • US Navy H‑60

Potential application:

  • US Army H‑60
  • USAF Fixed wing transports Jump and Load Master
  • AFSOC, MH/HH‑60, H‑53, & AC 130 Gunships

MAWR webbing lengths can be tailored to accommodate any aircraft interior up to 80 inches. Including the aircrew restraint harness strap this can bring the total restraint system length up to approximately 110 inches.

Crewmember Interface

Single‑handed operation while wearing heavy gloves, including cold weather and chemical/biological gloves.
