HEELS ‑ Helicopter Emergency Egress Lighting System

Originally developed in 1982, the Helicopter Emergency Egress Lighting System (HEELS) has been installed in thousands of military helicopters worldwide. Designed to comply with MIL‑L‑85676(AS), the system has proven itself to be extremely reliable and has been credited with saving lives on several occasions.

A typical installation of HEELS consists of an array of LED lamps within a sealed silicone tube placed around the escape hatches or doors in the shape of an inverted "U". The aircraft PMG (Permanent Magnet Generator) interface box monitors rotor rpm and interfaces the HEELS system to the aircraft. The system is activated upon the loss of a signal that is rotor rpm dependent. When the rotors fall below a threshold rpm, the HEELS will automatically illuminate. The system is operational even when immersed to a depth of 50 feet. The HEELS Control Unit consists of an electronic module with a removable Ni‑Cad battery pack The batteries are automatically recharged during flight.

Product Applications
