HBU‑12/B Automatic Lap Belt

Description


The HBU‑12/B automatic lap belt is a Koch‑developed upgrade to the HBU‑12/A belt that was designed to improve ease of opening and reduce snagging.

It comprises two high strength double‑reeve lap belt straps incorporating Koch “Black Box” webbing adjusters, for ease of adjustment and improved tightening security.

The buckle assembly includes both automatic and manual opening capability. In automatic mode the buckle release is actuated by hot gas fed from the ejection seat as part of the post‑ejection occupant‑seat separation sequence. For normal egress, manual bailout and emergency ground egress, buckle release involves a simple one‑handed operation (A double lever arrangement precludes inadvertent release due to snagging or windblast). A “Gold Key” device attached to a parachute deployment lanyard deploys the parachute when the belt operates in the automatic mode. In manual mode the gold key separates from the buckle without deploying the parachute. An interlock prevents connection of the buckle without the gold key in place.
